About this book

Five hundred thousand dollars. One impossible choice. Clara Vance didn't create the debt that landed on her doorstep — but Mikhail Volkov doesn't deal in fairness. He deals in leverage.

He doesn't want her money. He wants her hand — literally. Marriage as collateral. A contract sealed with a ring she never chose to wear. She hates him for it. She hates herself more for the way her pulse betrays her every time he's close enough to touch.

But debts aren't the only thing being called in. Someone else wants what Mikhail has — and they're willing to burn the whole arrangement down to get it, starting with the one person Clara can't lose: her little sister.

Now Clara has to figure out which is more dangerous — the enemy circling outside, or the husband she can't stop wanting inside her own walls. A slow-burn, forced-marriage dark romance where every tenderness comes with a price.

The slow burn is absolutely earned

I read forced-marriage romances constantly and most of them rush the tension to get to the good parts. This one doesn't. Every moment between them is loaded with what they're both refusing to say, and by the time it breaks, I had been holding my breath for fifty pages. Worth every minute of the wait.

Clara is the heroine the genre needed

She doesn't melt. She doesn't immediately forgive. She fights, she bargains, she makes bad choices for understandable reasons, and she holds her dignity in a situation designed to strip it. I loved her. Mikhail I respected — which is harder.

Read it in one night

I told myself I'd stop at chapter five and go to sleep. I did not stop at chapter five. I finished it at 2 a.m. and had to sit with the ending for a while before I could wind down. A story that keeps its grip.

Mikhail walks the line perfectly

A good morally grey hero is hard. He needs to be frightening without being cartoonish and capable of softness without losing the edge. Mikhail manages it. A few early scenes I thought he tipped too far — by the end I understood why those scenes were in there.
